Influencia del estrés sobre las capacidades cognitivas

Abstract

El estrés es un importante modulador de la función cognitiva, cuando se experimenta tanto de forma aguda como crónica. El estrés puede influir en el rendimiento cognitivo de maneras distintas, dependiendo de una combinación de factores relacionados, tanto con el propio estrés, como con el tipo de la función cognitiva en juego. Entre los factores especialmente importantes figuran su intensidad y su duración. La operación cognitiva concreta (memoria implícita o explícita, memoria operativa, etc.) es esencial para definir los efectos del estrés. El estrés leve o moderado tiende a facilitar el rendimiento cognitivo en general. El estrés alto tiende a deteriorar las operaciones cognitivas implicadas en la formación de memorias explicitas o que requieren un razonamiento flexible y complejo mientras que, por el contrario, mejora el rendimiento en pruebas de memoria implícita y en tareas bien ensayadas. Además de estos principios generales, existen diferencias individuales importantes en cuanto a los efectos cognitivos del estrés. Actuar sobre el estrés de los individuos puede ser una estrategia eficaz para mejorar el rendimiento cognitivo, tanto en el contexto general de aprendizaje como en las situaciones de examen.
