El autor establece cuatro épocas históricas para explicar los principales cambios experimentados por los manuales escolares españoles de historia, tanto en la enseñanza primaria como en el secundario: La creación del código disciplinar (1836-1890), la reformulación positivista y europeista del código disciplinar (1880-1939).
