El exilio republicano español

Abstract

Se relata cómo fue el exilio. El día 1 de abril de 1939 el triunfante general Francisco Franco anunciaba el término de la Guerra Civil española que había durado cerca de tres años. Así llegaba también a su fin la Segunda República, instaurada apenas en 1931, que había despertado expectativas de democratización, justicia social y modernidad en muchos españoles. Los que fueron partidarios de este proyecto y defendieron al gobierno republicano de la insurrección militar en su contra, serían considerados enemigos del nuevo régimen. Franco no hizo distingos, para él y los intereses que representaba tan indeseables eran los republicanos como los socialistas, los comunistas como los anarquistas, los autonomistas como los separatistas e, incluso, algunos monárquicos antiautoritarios. Ninguno de ellos habría de tener lugar en la España que pretendía el Caudillo. A aquellos afortunados que tuvieron la posibilidad de huir de la cárcel o de la muerte que el nuevo régimen les deparaba sólo les quedó el camino del destierro.
