Abstract

A enorme estrutura que sustenta a Igreja Católica permitiu-lhe ocupar um lugar privilegiado na promoção da paz, nomeadamente, quando esta é entendida não como a mera ausência da violência, mas quando se associa a um desenvolvimento social, económico e cultural dos indivíduos. Nos anos 60, a figura do Papa João XXIII, promotor do Concílio do Vaticano II e autor da encíclica Pacem in Terris, e do seu sucessor Paulo VI acentuaram o compromisso da Igreja com a paz. O Concílio, que se realizou entre 1962 e 1965, assinalou a grande viragem na relação da Igreja Católica com o mundo, estabelecendo novas linhas de acção assentes, fundamentalmente, na igualdade de todos os homens, na solidariedade com os mais necessitados e na primazia da Palavra de Deus. Das decisões do Concílio derivaram vários instrumentos importantes para a promoção da paz, designadamente, a criação de Comissões de Justiça e Paz, com o objectivo de “estimular a comunidade católica para promover o desenvolvimento dos países pobres e a justiça social internacional” (1).
