Residential care homes have as their primary objective the adequate satisfaction of the needs and well-being of the young people in care, as well as the establishment of secure and stable emotional bonds, which are crucial for the structuring and development of their personality, including their psychosexual development. The overwhelming majority of the population in residential care are adolescents or young people, for whom the construction of intimacy is the main task at this developmental stage. Therefore, residential care homes have the responsibility to ensure that the children, adolescents, and young people in care have the conditions that contribute to the promotion of their identity, intimacy, and the integration of their life history. Thus, the main objective of this study is to understand how the topics of intimacy and sexuality are addressed in residential care homes for children and young people from the perspective of the adolescents in care and their caregivers. In this regard, the study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of these young people about sexuality and sexual education. To conduct this study, a sample of 39 caregivers from various residential care homes and 50 adolescents was used. The caregivers were given a semi-structured questionnaire, and the adolescents completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Sexuality Knowledge Questionnaire, and the Sexuality and Sexual Health Attitudes and Beliefs Questionnaire. Differences were observed in the adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs depending on their age, length of institutionalization, and gender. Greater knowledge of sexuality was associated with fewer misconceptions about sexuality and sexual education.

As casas de acolhimento têm como principal objetivo a satisfação adequada das necessidades e do bem-estar dos jovens que estão em acolhimento, a promoção do seu desenvolvimento harmonioso, o que inclui o desenvolvimento psicossexual, através do estabelecimento de laços afectivos, seguros e estáveis, determinantes para a estruturação e desenvolvimento da sua personalidade. A esmagadora maioria da população em acolhimento residencial são adolescentes ou jovens, sendo a construção da intimidade a principal tarefa nesta fase desenvolvimental. Desta forma, as casas de acolhimento têm a responsabilidade de assegurar às crianças, adolescentes e jovens em acolhimento condições que contribuam para promover a construção da sua identidade, intimidade e integração da sua história de vida. Assim, o objetivo principal deste estudo consiste em compreender como são abordadas as temáticas da intimidade e sexualidade nas casas de acolhimento de crianças e jovens na perspetiva dos adolescentes acolhidos e dos seus cuidadores. Neste sentido, procurou-se investigar sobre os conhecimentos, atitudes e crenças destes jovens sobre sexualidade e educação sexual. Participaram neste estudo 39 cuidadores e 50 adolescentes de várias casas de acolhimento. Foi aplicado aos cuidadores um questionário semiestruturado e aos adolescentes o questionário sociodemográfico, o Questionário de Conhecimentos sobre Sexualidade e o Questionário das Atitudes e Crenças sobre Sexualidade e Saúde Sexual. Observaram-se diferenças nos conhecimentos, atitudes e crenças dos adolescentes em função da idade, tempo de institucionalização e género. A posse de mais conhecimentos sobre sexualidade está relacionada com menos crenças sobre sexualidade e educação sexual.
