Abstract

The analysis of social skills and their difficulties throughout adolescence is essential for a better understanding of certain behaviors, in particular violent behaviors, associated with aggression and victimization. The present study aimed to analyze the effect of socio-emotional skills on aggression and verbal victimization behaviors. 289 adolescents participated (156 girls and 133 boys) aged between 12 and 19 years old. To assess the involvement in aggression and verbal victimization behaviors, the Interpersonal Behavior Scale in the School Context (ECICE) was used. To assess social skills, the Portuguese version of the Social Skills Improvement System – Rating Scales (SSIS-RS) was used. Statistically significant differences were observed in terms of socio-emotional skills according to gender, as girls scored higher than boys. Likewise, significant differences were observed regarding verbal aggression, in which boys scored higher than girls. Concomitantly, a negative association was observed between socio-emotional skills and involvement in aggression and verbal victimization behaviors. Additionally, socioemotional skills uniquely predicted involvement in verbal aggression behaviors. Adolescents with more difficulties in social skills are more involved in verbal aggression behaviors. The results obtained point to some discrepancies with the existing literature, so these differences allow us to add important information to the investigations previously developed, to better understand the involvement of adolescents in these behaviors.
