A arquitetura popular na marca ocidental do Médio Tejo : a construção em tufo calcário

Abstract

Over the years, there have been plentiful studies and inquiries about Portuguese vernacular architecture. None of these, however, has thus far come to be known as a definitive study, though several are still sought out and scrutinized in the fields of architectural research. One can only say that there is a gap in this topic about tufa –a variety of limestone –as a material and its associated architecture. Under these circumstances, there is a strong motive to write works over this subject. The Médio Tejo region has always been presented as a part of the larger Ribatejo region or even the Estremadura one. The wide areas included in these works has led to an abundance of misinformation being thought as valid. Not only that, but tufa masonry was relegated to a status of obscurity. This resulted in tufa architecture not being considered as a style on its own. But this style is the basis of vernacular buildings between the Almonda and the Alviela rivers, having expression not only in the urban level, but also in the rural and even industrial fields. Such is its presence in the region that we must consider it and study it, so that we can protect the heritage of its architectural role and preserve the memory of its great cultural significance.
