Abstract

Abstract: The concept of humor has been studied from the psychological, physiological and anthropological point of view. However, there is no unanimously accepted concept yet, there is an interest in how humor relates to different aspects of functioning. The aim of this research was to understand the existence of an association between comics humor styles and the presence of depressive symptoms, since studies on this theme are practically nonexistent. In this sense, 49 participants (39 females and 10 males), aged between 18 and 67 years and of Portuguese nationality participated in the research. The Portuguese version of Comic Styles Maker was used to assess the mood styles adopted by the participants and an adaptation of the DSM-5 semi-structured interview, SCID-5, to select participants with depressive symptoms. The results demonstrate significant correlations between dark and light humor styles and the presence of depressive symptoms. The dark humor styles (sarcastic and cynical) were the most robust correlations. In addition, it was possible to conclude that 42.5% of the variance in depressive symptomatology is explained by cynicism humor style.
