A relação entre o conhecimento emocional e o rendimento escolar

Abstract

Abstract: Emotional knowledge has been considered relevant for psychosocial adaptation, for the development of positive attitudes in adapting to school and for school performance. The present research aims to evaluate the emotional knowledge in elementary school children and to understand the relationship between emotional knowledge and school performance. Participants in this study were 60 Portuguese students from a school in the District of Porto, who attended the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of the elementary school, in the 2017/18 school year. To evaluate the emotional knowledge, it was used the Emotional Knowledge Assessment Scale - EACE (Alves, 2006). The school performance was obtained from the classifications provided by the teachers in the curricular subjects, referring to the second school period of the 2017/18 school year. In this study, correlation analyzes were performed between the variables. The results suggest that children successfully identify basic emotions of joy, sadness, anger and fear, and that this identification is facilitated when emotions are represented through photographs. This process seems to improve over time as students better identify emotions in later years of schooling. Finally, the results show the existence of positive and statistically significant relationships between emotional knowledge and school performance. The results of the present study raise to the importance of interventions in the first years of schooling in the promotion of emotional knowledge, which may coincide with the improvement of oral and written language.
