A romanização teve uma influência importante nos espaço urbanos da Península Ibérica, incluindo, obviamente, o território do noroeste. É neste território que nos focaremos, mais precisamente, no que à atual área portuguesa diz respeito. Em consequência do processo de romanização, muitos dos espaços urbanos existentes nesta região adquiriram um profundo desenvolvimento morfológico, precisamente através da influência dos invasores romanos que, com eles, trouxeram os seus próprios conceitos de cidade, fazendo questão de aqui os introduzir. No entanto, este processo foi marcado por dificuldades inesperadas no terreno - caracterizado por uma geografia difícil, tão remota e montanhosa - que obrigou os romanos a confrontarem-se com os povos castrejos locais, com a sua cultura, e com os seus povoados fortificados - os Castros - "fáceis de defender e difíceis de atacar" (Moreira, 1982: 34). De origem indígena, aqui se fixaram e desenvolveram inúmeras destas povoações com uma forte personalidade e perfeitamente adaptadas às necessidades de habitar e trabalhar nestas àreas. Contudo, houve castros que sofreram inequivocamente a influência romana e outros que praticamente se mantiveram incólumes ao processo de romanização. Era preferível, aos romanos, desenvolver alguns castros em pontos estratégicos, fazendo-os atingir dimensões consideráveis. Com este estratagema criaram mais espaço para dar abrigo, mesmo que forçadamente, aos habitantes de outros castros mais pequenos, os quais, normalmente, eram incendiados ou destruídos. Este trabalho de investigação procura, precisamente, fazer um estudo que irá incidir sobre o urbanismo romano, o espaço urbano castrejo e o cruzamento de ambos. É, pois, neste último fator que residem as respostas que procuramos, e que se reconduzem a saber em que medida este fenómeno de romanização influenciou, urbanisticamente, o ordenamento e estruturação dos povoados castrejos, bem como a cultura e organização social dos seus habitantes.

Romanization had an important influence in the urban spaces of the Iberian Peninsula, including, obviously, the territory of the northwest. It's in this area that we will focus on, more precisely, as the current Portuguese area relates to. As a result of romanization process, many of the existing urban spaces in this region acquired a profound morphological development, precisely through the influence of the Roman invaders that, with them, brought their own city concepts, making sure to introduce them here. However, this process was market by unexpected difficulties in the field - characterized by a difficult geography, so remote and mountainous - which forced the romans to confront with the local people, with their culture, and their fortified villages - the Hill Forts - "easy to defend and difficult to attack" (Moreira, 1982: 34). Of indigenous origin, they settled here and developed many of these villages with a strong personality and perfectly adapted to the needs of living and working in these areas. However, there were hill forts that unequivocally suffered the roman influence and others that virtually remained untouched by romanization process. It was preferable, to the Romans, develop some of this hill forts at strategic points, making them reach considerable dimensions. With this sratagem, they created more space to provide sherter, even being forced, to the inhabitants of other smaller forts, which usually were burned or destroyed. This research seeks, precisely, to do a study that will focus on the roman urbanism, the hill fort urban space and on the intersection of both. Therefore, it's in this last factor that lie the answers we seek, and that lead back to know to what extent this phenomenon of romanization influenced, urbanistically, the planning and structuring of hill forts, as well as the culture and social organization of its inhabitants.
