Abstract

A propósito de las fuentes de la historia, escribía Febvre lo siguiente: "La historia se hace con documentos escritos", por cierto. Cuando existen. Pero se la puede hacer, se la debe hacer, sin documentos escritos, si no existen. Con todo esto que la ingeniosidad del historiador le consiente utilizar para producir su miel si le faltan las flores acostumbradas. Incluso con palabras. Signos. Paisajes y tejas. Con las formas del campo y de las hierbas. Con los eclipses de la luna y las arremetidas de los caballos de tiro. Con las pericias sobre piedra hechas por los geólogos y con los análisis de metales hechos por los químicos. En suma, con todo eso que, perteneciendo al hombre, expresa al hombre, demuestra la presencia, la actividad, los gustos y los modos de ser del hombre. Quizá, toda una parte, y la mas fascinante, de nuestro trabajo de historiadores, ¿no consiste propiamente en el esfuerzo continuo de hacer hablar las cosas mudas, de hacerlas decir lo que solas no dicen sobre los hombres, sobre la sociedad que las ha producido, y de construir finalmente esta vasta.
