Nematodos como indicadores ambientales

Abstract

Los nematodos juegan un papel importante en una serie de procesos ecológicos que son clave para el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. Una aplicación muy particular, que ha tomado auge en los últimos años, es el uso de la diversidad de nematodos como bioindicadores de la calidad de suelos y sedimentos acuáticos (Bongers, 1999, Bongers & Ferris, 1999, Yeates & Bongers, 1999, Neher, 2001). La ecología del suelo es sumamente vulnerable a los contaminantes y otras alteraciones, por lo que la evaluación permanente de los cambios que suceden a la microflora y microfauna es una forma de prevenir y restringir acciones que puedan afectar su multifuncionalidad. Los nematodos presentan características especiales para detectar los cambios que suceden en el ecosistema del suelo, como consecuencia de la contaminación, desforestación, eutroficación, etc. Los nematodos los podemos dividir en dos grandes grupos: los colonizadores (c) y los persistentes (p) según su estrategia de vida y habilidad de colonizar distintos ambientes. La escala utilizada para medir el disturbio ambiental esta calibrada de 1- 5, en dónde el valor 1 se asigna a los extremos colonizadores y el valor 5 a los extremos persistentes, hay especies nematodos que presentan características intermedias en la escala, por lo que se les asigna valores de 2-4. Esta escala es ampliamente aceptada por muchos nematólogos a nivel mundial y es la base para el cálculo de la ecuación utilizada en el monitoreo ambiental.
