Abstract

Knowledge in our country about the ichthyofauna associated with mangrove areas is scarce, especially in areas far from the central part of the Gulf. The sum of physical and biological characteristics that occur in these mangrove areas has allowed the establishment of animal populations of commercial importance (UNESCO 1980). These ecosystems are made up of intertidal forests and associated with estuarine mouths or channels that are of great importance for fish communities, representing a decisive habitat for a considerable number of species during the early stages of their life cycle (AMEZCUA-LINARES et al. 1987). Mangrove areas are extremely important as nurseries for many organisms that support fisheries (D'CROZ and KWECINSKI 1980), in addition to providing a route for migratory fish (anadromous and catadromous) and an environment in which a limited number of species they remain throughout their life cycle (ARAYA 1988). The objective of this work is to provide information on the fish populations associated with mangroves, in order to increase the knowledge of these populations and offer basic general information for the proper management of the fisheries found in these areas.
