Abstract

In this work the creation and constitution during the XII-XIII centuries of the first monastic-military Order in the territory of the Iberian Peninsula will be addressed: The Order of Calatrava. It is not a study that deepens in a comprehensive way in the process of its creation, but it is intended to serve as a guide to a first approach to the idiosyncrasy of the Order of Calatrava. We will approach the reason for its foundation, as well as the various avatars until they come under the umbrella of the Cistercian Order: its main hierarchical positions, its symbols, its possessions, etc. These processes are framed within a specific chronological framework, from its creation in 1158, to the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212.
