Authors: García Moreno, Jesús;

Una institución indiana: la encomienda.

Abstract

The conquest of America was a decisive event for the future of humanity. Its magnitude did not leave anyone indifferent, and even today they continue to be articulated historical discourses around the performance of the Spaniards on the other side of the Atlantic. In this work matizo some of these actions, and development in depth the impact of each of the modifications of one of the most criticized institutions of this process, the encomienda, being able to distinguish three great moments: an initial stage, another after promulgate the Laws of Burgos and another after the New Laws. I also clarify the performance of other institutions such as the Holy Office, as well as the consequences of conversion in Spanish territory of the New World, delving into the social and, specifically, the process of miscegenation.
