Psychological research has shown a strong link between emotional self-regulation and executive control, a mechanism implemented by several prefrontal areas and responsible for our ability to direct the focus of our interest to some specific events. Furthermore, a lot of work suggests that executive control plays a crucial role in the context of social interactions, inasmuch as unsuccessful attentional control can be the origin of disorders as social anxiety. In this paper we will conduct a brief review of self-regulation and attentional processes literature, focusing on their relevance in the context of interpersonal relationships and their link to the development of social anxiety disorders. Finally, we put forth how the practice of mindfulness could have beneficial long-term effect on the regulation of emotions.
