The stability of flame holders.

Abstract

A flame holder is a device placed in a stream of rapidly flowing combustible mixture to anchor the flame and to make burning possible. The flame holder has its most immediate application in the ram Jet fields where counter flows are impractical, and it is desirable that combustion take place at as high a stream velocity as possible. The desired stream velocities far exceed the flame propagation velocities; thus, the flame holder is introduced into the stream to prevent the blowing out of the flame from the combustion region and to anchor the flame at a predetermined point.
