The UICN Sahel Programme was established in 1987 with the aim of helping to identify natural resource management systems which allow for both higher production and better conservation. The Sahel Studies, published in two volumes in 1989 and 1991, sought to depict the principal factors and characteristics which determine the conditions in which societies evolve in the Sahel.
