The goal of this project is to develop a Monarch Butterfly protection area by conserving forest area. In the past local communities who owned the logging rights to the areas of interest have resisted efforts to protect the forest. The WWF and partner organizations created the Monarch Butterfly Conservation Fund (MBCF) which has been using economic incentives to conserve these critical Monarch habitats. Payments of US$18 per cubic meter of wood are being made to communities that have not cut within the protected area. Additional payments for conservation range from US$8 to US$12 per hectare of conserved forest.
