Abstract

El origen mítico de Roma, retratado en la Eneida de Virgilio, se remonta a Eneas, un troyano que escapó de la destrucción de su ciudad a manos de los griegos y llegó a la península itálica. Allí se casó con Lavinia, hija de Latino, rey del Lacio. Entre sus descendientes se cuentan Rómulo y Remo, abandonados por orden de un usurpador del trono, su tío-abuelo Amulio; Tito Livio, en su obra histórica Desde la fundación de Roma, describe sus vidas. Una loba ayuda a que sobrevivan Rómulo y Remo, y luego los cría un pastor, Faustulo. Al crecer, regresan a su tierra, destituyen a Amulio, y reponen a Numitor, su abuelo, en el trono. Rómulo y Remo deciden fundar una ciudad cerca del lugar de su crianza; Rómulo propone que sea cerca al Monte Palatino, y Remo cerca al monte Aventino. Ellos intepretan la voluntad de los dioses, contando las aves, y la decisión de Rómulo prevalece. Él funda Roma el 21 de abril de 753 AEC, y asesina a su hermano.
