Abstract

ABSTRACT: In order to participate in society and to achieve personal goals reading comprehension is an essential skill. Learning to comprehend texts requires a lot of time and effort. Accordingly, schools are responsible for providing the corresponding guidance and support. Reading activities in the classroom are based on textbooks. This makes textbooks crucial in teaching how to comprehend: depending on their design, textbooks can either help or prevent students from developing reading comprehension skill. Given this crucial role of textbooks I conducted a study to examine how they are designed. I considered two textbooks on the same subject (Science), covering two lessons from each textbook. I explored four variables, including the role of text within the lesson, how the texts are organized, what contents are addressed by the tasks, what activity is required by the tasks. The results showed that both textbooks are well designed in that they promote the development of reading comprehension skill. However, there are some relevant differences between the textbooks.
