Abstract

El estudio de los contextos funerarios en cueva constituye una fuente fundamental para comprender las dinámicas sociales, prácticas mortuorias y comportamientos rituales de la Prehistoria Reciente. En este marco, La cueva de La Garma C (Omoño, Cantabria), datada en el Calcolítico, se configura como un caso espacialmente relevante, al integrar inhumaciones múltiples acumulativas acompañados de ajuares cerámicos y líticos, junto con la presencia de un enterramiento individual en fosa. La interpretación tradicional de las cuevas funerarias se ha centrado en procesos de acumulación impersonal, homogénea y sucesiva de cadáveres, seguido de desplazamientos, remociones o reordenamientos destinados a habilitar inhumaciones. Con el fin de contrastar este modelo, el presente trabajo aborda el análisis de las dinámicas sociales mediante la caracterización biológica de los individuos depositados y la organización interna del espacio sepulcral. La metodología combina procedimientos antropológicos para la estimación de número mínimo de individuos (NMI), sexo biológico y edad de la muerte. En cuanto al análisis espacial se ha realizado mediante diferentes técnicas espaciales basadas en SIG y métodos estadísticos (KDE, K-means, DBSCAN, Clarke-Evans, Hopkins-Skellam...), orientados a identificar patrones de concentración, dispersión y relaciones entre restos y ajuares. Los resultados del estudio antropológico muestran un conjunto formado por un mínimo de doce individuos (cinco adultos, dos juveniles y cinco infantiles), lo que evidencia un uso del espacio no condicionado por criterios de edad o sexo, y ha permitido la reasociación anatómica de al menos tres individuos. En cuanto a las cuestiones espaciales, los resultados indican que la distribución de los restos no fue aleatoria, sino que responde a una estructura interna organizada en varios núcleos: una amplia zona central con densidad media de restos y presencia de ajuares; un núcleo este de mayor intensidad y menor tamaño, sin material asociados; y un posible foco secundario situado al norte del área central

The study of cave burial sites is a fundamental source for understanding the social dynamics, mortuary practices, and ritual behaviours of Recent Prehistory. In this context, the cave of La Garma C (Omoño, Cantabria), dating from the Chalcolithic period, is a particularly relevant case, as it contains multiple cumulative burials accompanied by ceramic and lithic grave goods, with a single burial in a pit. The traditional interpretation of burial caves has focused on impersonal, homogeneous, and successive accumulation processes of corpses, followed by displacements, removals, or rearrangements intended to enable burials. In order to contrast this model, this study addresses the analysis of social dynamics through the biological characterization of the individuals deposited and the internal organization of the burial space. The methodology combines anthropological procedures for estimating the minimum number of individuals (MNI), biological sex, and age at death. The spatial analysis was carried out using different GIS-based spatial techniques and statistical methods (KDE, K-means, DBSCAN, Clarke-Evans, Hopkins-Skellam, etc.), aimed at identifying patterns of concentration, dispersion, and relationships between remains and grave goods. The results of the anthropological study show a group of at least twelve individuals (five adults, two juveniles, and five children), which indicates that the use of the space was not conditioned by age or sex criteria, and has allowed the anatomical reassembly of at least three individuals. In terms of spatial analysis, the results indicate that the distribution of the remains was not random, but rather responds to an internal structure organized into several nuclei: a large central area with medium density of remains and the presence of grave goods; an eastern nucleus of greater intensity and smaller size, without associated material; and a possible secondary focus located to the north of the central area
