Abstract

La presente tesis doctoral aborda la distribución espacial de las manos negativas en el arte parietal paleolítico de Europa occidental (40.000 – 12.000 cal. BP). A diferencia de las figuras animales o los signos, estos motivos rara vez han sido objeto de análisis espaciales sistemáticos. A través del estudio de tres cuevas de la península ibérica (El Castillo, Fuente del Trucho y Fuente del Salín), este trabajo recurre a métodos innovadores — como la modelización 3D, los SIG y los análisis estadísticos — para evaluar las lógicas de distribución de estas manifestaciones. Los resultados revelan criterios recurrentes relacionados con la visibilidad, la accesibilidad y la capacidad de los espacios decorados. Asimismo, se identifican diferentes dinámicas espaciales singulares y puntuales, que pueden coexistir dentro de una misma cavidad. Estas elecciones reflejan comportamientos colectivos de carácter social y simbólico, vinculados con la organización del espacio subterráneo. En definitiva, este estudio propone una renovación metodológica y resalta el valor del análisis espacial a la hora de comprender la construcción simbólica existente en las cuevas con arte paleolítico.

This thesis focuses on the spatial distribution of hand stencils in Palaeolithic parietal art in Western Europe (40,000 – 12,000 cal. BP). In contrast to animal figures or abstract signs, these motifs have rarely been subjected to systematic spatial analysis. Through the study of three caves on the Iberian Peninsula (El Castillo, Fuente del Trucho, and Fuente del Salín), this research employs innovative methods — including 3D modelling, GIS, and statistical analyses — to assess the spatial logic underlying the placement of these figures. The results reveal recurring criteria found in decorated areas such as visibility, accessibility, and accommodation capacity. Additionally, singular spatial dynamics are identified, sometimes coexisting within the same cave. These spatial choices reflect social and symbolic behaviours embedded in the organisation of underground spaces. In short, this study offers a methodological renewal and highlights the relevance of spatial analysis in understanding the symbolic construction of decorated caves.
