Nash equilibrium and semialgebraic sets

Equilibrio de Nash y conjuntos semialgebraicos

Abstract

In game theory, one of the fundamental concepts is Nash equilibrium, which describes a situation where no player can improve his outcome by changing only his own strategy, given that the strategies of the other players are fixed. This concept is fundamental, especially in the area of economics, since it allows for modeling and understanding strategic behaviors. This work is focused on the existence of Nash equilibria and their characterization. By using fixed point theorems, we give sufficient conditions to ensure their existence in both pure strategy games and mixed strategy games. Moreover, we explore the complexity of these equilibria by means of semialgebraic sets, showing that any compact semialgebraic set can be expressed as the projection of the set of Nash equilibria of a game.
