El clasicismo en Goya

El clasicismo en Goya

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The figure of Francisco de Goya y Lucientes has frequently been interpreted from a romantic perspective, as an artist who did not follow the norms established in the Academies. The historiography of the 19th and 20th centuries projected on his figure and work a halo of mystery and legend, currently questioned because of exhaustive studies of his life and work. The truth is that Goya was an artist who always kept in mind the lessons learned from other authors, with a base from the study of Classical Antiquity. The objective of this work is to rescue the importance and relevance of the influence of Classical Art on Goya as a constant substrate of his artistic development. Throughout his artistic career, Goya constantly incorporated novelties, but he never abandoned the substratum of classicism, something that we can always observe if we delve into works as disparate as El Cristo Crucificado or La Maja Desnuda and La Maja Vestida. These last two are key works of female nude painting, works that represented a radical change in the way of showing a woman in art, with a fundamental influence on painting. In both works, after a first impression of pictorial innovation, we find numerous classic elements if we delve into their analysis.
