Social stigma in mental illness

Estigma social sobre las enfermedades mentales

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Currently, the prevalence of mental pathology has increased at a global level, highlighting the need to adopt a series of measures that favour its approach and reduce the possible consequences that it may trigger. One of the problems associated with this type of disease refers to what is known as social stigma, the basic components of which are stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. For this reason, it is important to implement a series of interventions that will reduce the impact on both patients and their families or people closest to them. From the field of nursing, a series of actions are proposed that interlace promotion, prevention and education, using a series of strategies that provide sufficient tools to the subjects to feel empowered and to manage to end a scourge that does not belong to them. Reducing the incidence of stigma also means reducing the consequences that this entails.
