RESUMEN: La enfermería escolar surge como un perfil asistencial emergente en España, aunque tiene una larga trayectoria en algunos países europeos como Suecia, Reino Unido o Francia; en otros países como los EE. UU. constituye una figura asistencial completamente consolidada e implantada en las escuelas. Las EE desempeñan todas las funciones propias de la profesión enfermera: asistencial, docente, investigadora y gestora. En el contexto del desarrollo de estas funciones, llevan a cabo actividades e intervenciones con el objetivo de mejorar y mantener la calidad de vida del alumnado del que son responsables y son el nexo fundamental entre la escuela y el resto de los servicios sanitarios. Algunas comunidades autónomas han diseñado estrategias con el fin de implantar la figura de la EE en el entorno escolar, como es el caso de la comunidad de Cantabria, que diseñó el Proyecto de Enfermería Escolar en Cantabria con el objetivo de impulsar la creación de esta figura. A pesar de los intentos por la implementación de la EE en España, sigue existiendo el debate acerca de su pertinencia o no en las aulas, ya que algunas de las funciones de las EE son comunes a las enfermeras de Atención Primaria (AP).
ABSTRACT: School nursing arises as an emerging healthcare profile in Spain, although it has a long history in some European countries such as Sweden, United Kingdom or France; in other countries such as the USA is a completely consolidated and established healthcare figure in schools. The school nursing performs all the functions of the nursing profession: caregiver, teacher, researcher and manager. In the context of the development of these functions, they carry out activities and interventions with the aim of improving and maintaining the quality of life of the pupils for whom they are responsible and they are the fundamental link between the school and the rest of the health services. Some Autonomous Communities have designed strategies to introduce the figure of the school nursing in the school environment, such as the community of Cantabria, which designed the School Nursing Project in Cantabria with the aim of promoting the creation of this figure. Despite the attempts to implement school nursing in Spain, there is still a debate about its relevance or not in the schools since some of their functions are common to Primary Care nurses.
