Abstract

ABSTRACT : Since the mid-twentieth century, a biomedical model has been established in which clinical training, research and clinical practice, and expert knowledge on the experience of the disease have prevailed. Parallel to this development, some medical sectors have been calling for the need of a medical model (PatientCentered Medicine) that brings back the patient´s centrality and embraces their needs, beliefs and values in a holistic approach to health and disease related problems. The so-called medical humanities have offered different tools to be able to understand the experience of the disease and the patient as its authorized voice. The study of first-person literature that talks about the disease is undoubtedly one of these tools. Through the analysis of six books published in Spanish between 1995 and 2018, this work aims to explore the formative capacity of the pathographic literature for a patient-centered medical model.
