El precio del ganado vacuno en Cantabria, 2005-2015

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Many years ago the predominant economic sectors in Cantabria were agriculture and cattle. Over the years, there has been a systematic shift which, currently, has made the Autonomous Community of Cantabria predominantly industrial and in which the service sector stands out. This has led to a state of neglect of the primary sector therefore making it have little bearing on the economy of our region at the present time. One way to add value to this sector, and specifically cattle, has been the creation of the National Cattle Market in Torrelavega. As its name implies it is a national market. It is of the utmost importance for our region as its cattle sales represent between 40% to 50% of all the cattle transactions in Cantabria. On its showground there are sales of livestock that range from cattle, sheep, goat and horse every Wednesday. The manner in which the transactions take place are laid down by the farmers themselves. They themselves transport the livestock to sell it to anyone who is willing to pay the set price. It is through this system that the weekly price listings are obtained. These price listings are published in the Diario Montañes newspaper every Thursday. The main objective of this work is to analyse the weekly price listings and more specifically their evolution, both in real and nominal terms, which the prices of wholesale, large, medium and young cattle have had over a ten year period. As such, the objective is to analyse if cattle prices have increased, decreased or levelled off between 2005 and 2015.
