ABSTRACT: The subject of this study is the Neopythagorean philosopher Apollonius of Tyana, being the main object for this study the biography written about him by Flavius Philostratus. In order to obtain a good understanding of this work and its protagonist, it´s formal aspects will be analyzed, as well as, the historical and sociocultural context in which it was developed. Also, will be analyzed the archetype of Θεiος ανηρ, a fundamental concept to understand the social & cultural relevance of the character as portrayed by Philostratus. It will also attend to the controversy that this character has generated throughout history when compared to the likes of Jesus of Nazareth. In the same way, it will be approached the historicity of Apollonius, and the "oblivion" to which he was subjected by Christianity and its subsequent resurgence in Western culture.
