La laicidad uruguaya

Abstract

Uruguay es un pequeño país del cono sur de América Latina en el que se concretó una temprana y conflictiva separación Iglesia Católica-Estado en 1919, asumiéndose éste como un Estado “laico”. Este proceso de separación institucional y construcción de lo que se ha dado en llamar “la laicidad” tuvo lugar desde el comienzo bajo la inspiración que en las elites conformadoras del joven país ejerció el caso de Francia, en donde habían sido educadas, aunque la expresión cultural de la laicidad uruguaya evidencia en la praxis mayores niveles de radicalidad que en el caso francés. El presente artículo incursiona en las características de la laicidad uruguaya, pasando revista a sus principales hitos y significación política y cultural. Se analiza el proceso que llevó a la separación institucional iglesia Católica-Estado en 1919, así como el desplazamiento de lo religioso a lo privado, la formulación jurídica de la laicidad y las improntas culturales que impregnaron, a modo de matriz, la visión y ubicación de lo religioso en Uruguay hasta prácticamente nuestros días. El texto culmina con un análisis de algunos de los elementos constitutivos y concretos de la laicidad en Uruguay, incluyendo el rol del Estado.
