Abstract

Muhammed Abduh forsøkte gjennom sitt virke å forene islam og modernitet, dette var et prosjekt som i hans samtid ikke var i tråd med tidsånden. For ettertiden bidro hans åpne tolkningsmodell til modernitetsvisjoner av enten mer islamsk eller mer moderne karakter. I denne oppgaven sees Muhammed Abduh sin visjon for modernitet i et kulturell prosess perspektiv og blir forsøk fremstilt som et, gitt konteksten, konstruktivt steg for å prosessere modernitetens slagkraftige innvirkning på et samfunn preget av en sterk og standhaftig tradisjon. For å belyse en slik vinkling består oppgaven av mange forskjellig komponenter av både narrativ og konseptuell karakter i tillegg til å se på reformprosjektet til Muhammad Abduh som delvis settes i kontrast til modernitetsdoktrinen fremstilt av sekularisten Ziya Gökalp.
