Uncovering the Cover : Reading Authenticity and Subjectivity in Cover Songs

Abstract

Coverlåten er et fascinerende konsept fordi den gir lytteren en følelse av gjenkjennelse og variasjon samtidig. Det er en prosess som er lett å forstå i praksis, men overraskende vanskelig å forklare teoretisk. Denne masteroppgaven er mitt bidrag til en diskurs som omhandler coverlåtens innflytelse på vår oppfatning av artister, og vår generelle forståelse av populærmusikk. Oppgaven bygger på sentrale teorier innenfor populærmusikkvitenskap, med både modernistiske og postmodernistiske perspektiver, og ideer fra sosiologi. Jeg legger fram analyser av fire casestudier som hver tar for seg forholdet mellom en original og en coverversjon, med spesielt fokus på opphav, subjektivitet og autentisitet. Sangene og artistene er forskjellige i sjanger og image: Britney Spears covrer the Rolling Stones, Sting covres av Eva Cassidy, og Beyoncé og Rihanna covres av henholdsvis Antony and the Johnsons og Jamie Cullum. Likevel, på tross av deres ulikheter kan casestudiene gi leseren nye ideer om hvordan coverlåter kan tolkes.
