Abstract

Denne studien består av fem hoveddeler. I det innledende kapittelet, beskriver jeg W.G. Sebalds litterære prosjekt. I kapittel to tar jeg hovedsakelig for meg grensen mellom kunsten og virkelighet i Sebalds prosa, og ser på de mekanismene og elementene som danner grunnlaget for Sebalds grenseoverskridende estetikk. Kapittel tre ”En Blikkenes Historie” er en gjennomgang av Sebalds omgang med ulike bilder og på hvilke måter disse er del av en større diskusjon om blikket, om hva det vil si å se og om ulike måter å se på. I kapittel fire viser jeg blant annet hvordan argumentasjonen i de foregående kapitlene er avgjørende for Sebalds selvfremstilling. I det avsluttende kapittelet kommenterer jeg metaplanet i Sebalds litterære prosjekt og viser hvordan og hvorfor hans menneske- og historiesyn kan sees på som en fortolkningspraksis og en stadig pågående prosess.
