Semantic richness, semantic context, and language learning

Abstract

Sabemos que haber adquirido una segunda lengua con una exposición limitada y artificial hace que el aprendizaje de nueva información y vocabulario en ese idioma sea particularmente difícil. El propósito de esta tesis es ayudarnos a comprender cómo podemos compensar, al menos parcialmente, estas dificultades presentando la información de una manera que ayude al aprendizaje. En particular, me concentré en las variables que afectan la riqueza semántica, entendida como la cantidad y variabilidad de información asociada con una palabra. Analicé dos factores: la emocionalidad del contexto semántico y la diversidad contextual. Los resultados mostraron que la emocionalidad del contexto semántico y la diversidad contextual pueden mejorar el aprendizaje en un idioma extranjero. A pesar de la reducción en emocionalidad en la lengua extranjera, el contexto emocional positivo no solo mejoró el aprendizaje de contenido y vocabulario en la lengua extranjera, sino que lo hizo en la misma medida que en la lengua materna. Del mismo modo, los efectos de la diversidad contextual también fueron iguales entre idiomas, aunque el vocabulario acotado en la lengua extranjera aumente la dificultad en la lectura. Estos resultados en su conjunto sugieren que aprender en un idioma extranjero y expandir el conocimiento en nuestra lengua nativa no es tan diferente, lo que nos permite aprovechar las herramientas de aprendizaje en la lengua nativa en la extranjera también.
