[ES] La importancia central de la cultura clásica en la historia occidental es indudable. El mundo clásico, esto es, Grecia y Roma antiguas, representan una de las referencias básicas de nuestras sociedades. La participación política, la ciudadanía, los cánones estéticos y culturales, entre otros, son algunos de los conceptos y realidades que provienen de aquella época. Al mismo tiempo, la tradición clásica en la modernidad occidental ha adolecido de una fuerte tendencia a la idealización, conformando una imagen estática y ahistórica de la Antigüedad clásica. En ese sentido, sólo en tiempos recientes estudiosos e intelectuales han advertido, por ejemplo, la fascinación que régimenes totalitarios, como los fascismos europeos, han experimentado por Grecia y Roma clásicas. Actualmente, en los inicios del siglo XXI, con nuevas y más críticas herramientas para analizar el pasado, es posible un acercamiento más comprehensivo e histórico al mundo clásico. Este artículo analiza de forma sucinta todos esos problemas.

[EN] It is beyond any doubt that classical culture was of central importance of in western history. The classical world, that is, ancient Greece and Rome, has represented one of the main references for our societies. Political participation, citizenship, aesthetics, cultural standards and many other basic notions come from those times. But, at the same time, classical tradition in western modernity, from the XVIth century on, has suffered from a strong tendency of idealization, shaping a static and unhistorical image of classical Antiquity. In this sense, only since recent times scholars and intellectuals have realized, for instance, the fascination that totalitarian regimes, like fascisms in Europe, felt for classical Greece and Rome. Now, at the beginning of the XXIth century, with new and more critical tools to analyse the past, it is possible to reach a more comprehensive and historical understanding of the classical world. This brief essay deals with all these problems.
