Monachesimo occidentale e monaci missionari

Abstract

La separazione dal mondo, alla ricerca della solitudine che agevola il rapporto con Dio, fu da subito la sostanza della condizione monastica, la quale col tempo ebbe un suo spazio riconosciuto nella comunità ecclesiale e si dotò di testi normativi culminati nella regola di Benedetto, sintesi di due secoli di sperimentazioni condotte in area mediterranea. A tale monachesimo si affiancò l’esperienza nata nello spazio insulare celtico, caratterizzata da un forte ascetismo penitenziale e dall’erranza lontano dalla patria, che favorì anche l’assunzione di impegni missionari. Nel pieno medioevo in Occidente prevalse lo stile benedettino e si impose quindi un monachesimo liturgico nel quale il monaco si definì sempre più come persona dedita essenzialmente all’attività orante.
