Abstract

Il marciume acido è una malattia della vite causata da un complesso di microorganismi tra cui lieviti, batteri e funghi filamentosi. Gli acini infetti emanano un odore di acido acetico che attrae i moscerini della frutta (Drosophila spp.) che sono strettamente correlati ai microorganismi che causano il marciume. Tuttavia, l'eziologia e l'epidemiologia del marciume acido non sono completamente comprese, rendendone la gestione difficile e spesso inefficace. La presente tesi vuole raccogliere tutte le conoscenze disponibili sul marciume acido, focalizzandosi sulla sua eziologia, epidemiologia e controllo per identificare le lacune conoscitive ed informare ulteriori attività di ricerca. I capitoli includono: i) un’analisi sistematica della letteratura per raccogliere tutte le informazioni disponibili sul marciume acido; ii) una meta-analisi sul controllo del marciume acido e funghi filamentosi isolati da acini infetti; iii) identificazione e caratterizzazione del microbiota di grappoli sani e infetti; e iv) uno studio dell'effetto delle condizioni ambientali sulla composizione del microbioma associato a grappoli d'uva colpiti dal marciume. I risultati ottenuti saranno utili per lo sviluppo di un modello meccanicistico, basato sulle condizioni meteorologiche, per prevedere l'insorgenza e lo sviluppo della malattia nei vigneti, da utilizzare per programmare metodi di controllo appropriati per gestire il marciume acido.

Sour rot (SR) is a grapevine disease caused by a community of microorganisms including yeasts, bacteria, and filamentous fungi. Rotten berries are characterized by the smell of acetic acid that attracts fruit flies (Drosophila spp.) which are closely related to SR-inducing microbes. However, the etiology and epidemiology of SR are not completely understood, making its management challenging and often ineffective. The present dissertation wants to retrieve all the available knowledge on SR with a focus on its etiology, epidemiology, and control to identify the knowledge gaps and to inform further research activities. Chapters include: i) a systematic literature review to retrieve all available information on SR; ii) a network meta-analysis on the control of grape SR and filamentous fungi isolated from rotten berries; iii) identification and characterization of the microbiota of healthy and affected bunches; and iv) a study of the effect of environmental conditions on the composition of the microbiome associated to grape bunches affected by SR. The results provided new information that will be useful for the development of a mechanistic, weather-driven model for predicting the onset and development of SR in vineyards to be used for scheduling appropriate control methods to manage SR.
