Abstract

The manuscript 1784 of the CRAI’ Biblioteca de Reserva, University of Barcelona, contains a medical compendium specializing, preeminently, in eye diseases and their remedies. This PhD thesis determines whether it in fact dates is from the 16th - 17th century, and wether it comes from the eastern Mediterranean, in the Šām area. As for the content, the research reveals that it is based, in particular, on al-ʿUmda al- kuḥliyya fī l-amrāḍ al-baṣariyya, a work on eye medicine that dates from the second half of the fourteenth century. In addition, it is possible to extract valuable data, in order to contextualize this anonymous work in the Arab ocular medical tradition, throught the general analysis of the MS 1784, the edition and translation to catalan of part of it, the elaboration of a glossary of remedies and a colletion of mentioned illneses.
