Abstract

The Estudiantina is a plucked string ensemble proper of Colombian traditional Andean music. These works, composed by the researcher, employ non-conventional notation methods and present rhythmic and technical characteristics that are uncommon in the traditional practices of this ensemble format. Data were collected through video recordings and later analyzed using six rubric-based categories: Active Participation, Attentive Listening, Interpretative Refinement, Reception of New Knowledge, Collaboration and Mutual Support, Musical Understanding, and Metacognition. The analysis revealed four main themes that encapsulate the rehearsal experiences of the ensemble members: (1) Attitudes toward learning contemporary works within a Estudiantina; (2) Guidance and dialogue: the role of the teacher in the ensemble; (3) Musical behaviors of the ensemble members; and (4) Between pedagogical support and musical direction.
