Paul Desjardins decía hace poco tiempo que el poeta alemán Enrique Heine era francés por la mucha gracia y el mucho ingenio que tenía. Sin discutir la nacionalidad literaria que el periodista da al autor del Intermezzo Lírico, recordamos la frase para aplicársela al distinguido boyacense parte de cuyos artículos en prosa y poesías contiene este que es el primer volumen de sus obras. En efecto, Martín Guerra es escritor por la gracia y el ingenio. Estas dos dotes son las notas dominantes en la espontánea armonía de sus escritos. Débese esto principalmente -aparte sus disposiciones ingénitas- á que el autor de estos Ensayos no tiene por profesión la literatura : escribe ó canta en los intervalos que le dejan sus negocios por satisfacer una necesidad de su espíritu naturalmente expansivo. Puede decirse que no ha buscado los temas de sus escritos en prosa ni el asunto de sus versos... Jamás hombre alguno expresó en mejores cláusulas su última voluntad como Martín Guerra al escribir su testamento en el pleno goce de sus facultades afictivas,s y sano de cuerpo y de espíritu. Por ello encabeza la colección que hemos hecho de sus Ensayos ese que juzgamos el mejor... Contemplar las cosas de la vida por el lado risueño ; tener ojos para ver en cada hombre lo divino de su naturaleza moral ; ahogar como el semidiós en su cuna las serpientes, el germen de las malas pasiones ; darse á sí mismo la satisfacción de perdonar la injuria por el amor ; tener el valor moral de ser fiel á sus convicciones ; y trasmitir todo esto por medio de las eternas palpitaciones de la palabra escrita á corazones ateridos por la nieve caída en la estación de sus tribulaciones ; defender la causa de los oprimidos, y no dejar que en nuestras manos se abata el pendón de la justicia, es, en nuestra opinión, ser escritor en generoso concepto
