Abstract

Assuming the risks inherent in the study of a 19th century text in the light of a subgenre born only after the Second World War, I seek to trace in Vinte horas de liteira (1864), by Camilo Castelo Branco, thematic and formal traits that bring that work closer to the category of the road novel. The aim of this work is to understand how the evolution of transportation depicted by the author-narrator in the novel’s “Introduction” is the point of departure for many reflections, carried by him or by António Joaquim, his road buddy, that reveal a mutating conception of time and space, which the 20th century forms of mobility would intensify and the road narrative would represent. The analysis will outline three aspects of Camilo’s text: (i) the triple chronotope (road, meeting, and threshold); (ii) the dialogical reflection on the move; (iii) mobility practice as position taking.
