Abstract

The aging of the population is seen as one of the central problems of today. The Portuguese society is now considered an aging society. This shows the need for prevention and intervention in this population, especially at the cognitive level. The present study aimed to contribute to the exploratory scientific validation of the efficacy of the online platform for cognitive training primerCOG, applied in two distinct participant profiles: healthy elderly population and elderly population with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), after 10 training sessions. The results revealed that individuals with MCI showed significant improvements in some cognitive functions after the application of the cognitive training program using the online platform primerCOG. Specifically, there were significant differences in overall cognitive functions in the MCI profile in both tests of neuropsychological screening (Montreal Cognitive Assessment – MoCA, and Mini-Mental State Examination – MMSE). Moreover, there were also significant improvements in executive functions assessed by the Trail Making Test – Part B (TMTB), as well as in working memory and attention assessed by the Digit Span Test of the Wechsler Memory Scale. Results also showed that the healthy profile did not reveal any significant improvements in cognitive functions. Finally, there was a significant increase in the depressive symptomatology assessed by the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) in the healthy profile. These results support the pertinence of applying cognitive training programs in the elderly with MCI and contribute to the validation of the platform primerCOG. It is also suggested that longitudinal studies should be performed with healthy population to assess the efficacy of the training in this population, with preventive effects.
