The clerical celibacy question comes throughout times, since the volunteer practice of the first centuries to the present day imposition, along a winding and irregular course where criticists and apologists digladiate arguments and convictions. In Portugal, the nineteenth century, mainly the 1820 to 1910 period, due to is social and political conditionings allowed a fertile conjuncture where discussion was kept on a continuous crescendo. The present work draws the evolution of the controversy during this period, signalling the most determinative and significative moments grouped in the two ideological agglutinative nucleus of the century: liberalism and republicanism. As a start a chapter about the French Revolution religious changes, remote origin of the question, that spreads out in the portuguese cultural context.
A questão do celibato clerical atravessa os tempos, desde a prática voluntária dos primeiros séculos à actual imposição, num percurso sinuoso e irregular, onde apologistas e críticos digladiam argumentos e convicções. Em Portugal, o século XIX, sobretudo o período de 1820 a 1910, pelas suas condicionantes sociais e políticas, permitiu uma conjuntura fecunda a este debate, onde a discussão se manteve num crescendo contínuo. O presente trabalho desenha o evoluir da polémica durante este período, assinalando os momentos mais determinantes e significativos, agrupados nos dois núcleos ideológicos aglutinadores do século: liberalismo e republicanismo. A iniciar, um capítulo sobre as transformações religiosas da Revolução Francesa, origem remota da polémica que se desenrola no contexto cultural português.
