Abstract

This paper aims to propose a new reading of Gustav Mahler’s sketches for his last and unfinished Symphony No.10, in F major. The incomplete state of the draft makes this an open work, which allows for supposition on possible different resolutions for its creative paradox: on one side fully structured on its extrinsic outline; on the other inconsequent as a complete work of art. Therefore it is here proposed a new reading of those drafts, conceived from the outset for a 21-piece ensemble. To this end a thorough study of the composer's catalogue, framing its aesthetic from the general to the particular, was carried out, as well as the comparative analysis of the other completions of the work already in existence. Hence a diverse and creative approach was sought, as to achieve the “reinvention of the draft for large ensemble” now proposed, and which will also be discussed in detail. On an equally performative standpoint, an audio recording of the performance (premiere) of the present version is also presented.
