Estudiamos la tipología de los signáculos tallados en piedra caliza que coronan la línea cumbrera de la cubierta de la iglesia asturiana de San Salvador de Valdediós (circa 893), como elementos de carácter simbólico funerario. Consideramos que son coetáneos a la construcción del pórtico meridional de la iglesia cuya función sería la de Panteón Real de Alfonso III y su consorte. Establecemos paralelos con mausoleos de la época y con arquetas relicarios en los que permanece una simbología funeraria semejante.
