W rozprawie podjęto temat przemian osadniczych jakie miały miejsce we wczesnym średniowieczu na terenie, który w źródłach średniowiecznych określany jest jako "kasztelania ostrowska". Jednym z ważnych elementów pracy jest wyznaczenie zasięgu tej jednostki administracyjnej. Propozycję przebiegu granic kasztelanii ostrowskiej przygotowano w oparciu o analizę źródeł pisanych, archeologicznych, warunków środowiska naturalnego i innego typu granic administracyjnych (np. diecezji, parafii). Centralnym punktem regionu był gród znajdujący się na Ostrowie Lednickim, a cały badany obszar zawierał się w zachodniej części ziemi gnieźnieńskiej. Na podstawie znalezisk archeologicznych oraz wyników badań wykopaliskowych przedstawiono dynamikę przemian osadniczych w regionie. W tym celu analizie poddano wczesnośredniowieczne grody, osady otwarte, cmentarzyska oraz skarby monet i ozdób. Podjęto również tematykę osadnictwa służebnego, innoplemiennego i obcoetnicznego. Na tej podstawie przedstawiono charakterystykę osadnictwa w czterech okresach: czasie pojawienia się pierwszych społeczności o charakterze słowiańskim, stopniowym rozwoju regionu w okresie przedpaństwowym, okres dynamicznych zmian w czasach monarchii pierwszych Piastów, kiedy Ostrów Lednicki stał się jedną z rezydencji władców. Następnie zaprezentowano ślady upadku znaczenia grodu w połowie XI wieku i procesy osadnicze jakie miały miejsce w kasztelanii w XII i XIII wieku. The dissertation examines the transformation of settlements during the early Middle Ages in the region known as the "castellany of Ostrov" in medieval sources. A key focus of this research is to define the boundaries of this administrative unit. The proposed delineation of the castellany of Ostrov is based on an analysis of written and archaeological sources, environmental conditions, and other administrative borders such as dioceses and parishes. The central point of the region was the fortress located in Ostrów Lednicki, situated in the western part of the Gniezno Land. The study presents the dynamics of settlement changes in the region through an examination of archaeological findings and excavation results. This includes the analysis of early medieval strongholds, unfortified settlements, cemeteries, and coin hoards. The presence of servant populations, other tribal groups, and foreign ethnic settlements is also addressed. Based on these findings, the thesis offers a characterization of settlement in four distinct periods: the emergence of the first Slavic communities; the gradual development of the region during the pre-state period; the period of significant, dynamic changes under the rule of the first Piast dynasty, with Ostrów Lednicki becoming one of the ruling residences, followed by signs of the stronghold's diminishing importance in the mid-11th century; finally, the settlement processes that occurred in the castellany during the 12th and 13th centuries.
