Celem publikacji jest interpretacja złożonego, ambiwalentnego stosunku Cypriana Norwida do antycznej „Romanitas” oraz ujawnienie bogatej gamy jego nawiązań do starorzymskiej rzeczywistości. Dotąd nie powstała monografia poświęcona wątkom rzymskim w twórczości Norwida. Rzym w twórczości Norwida to nie tylko literalne odniesienia, komentarze, interpretacje. W dziełach poety możemy doszukać się obecności rzymskiej scenerii, atmosfery, mniej lub bardziej luźnych nawiązań do tekstów czy mitów. „Roma antiqua” stanowi też niezwykle istotny element Norwidowej historiozofii, ujawniającej się w ogromnej ilości jego dzieł. Rozważania poety na temat historii, sztuki, literatury, wolności słowa niejednokrotnie prezentowane są przez pryzmat antycznego Rzymu, z którego Norwid chętnie czerpał przykłady. Niezwykle często wykorzystywał rzymskie egzempla, by mówić o zagadnieniach sobie współczesnych, dotyczących ogólnie dziewiętnastowiecznej cywilizacji czy polskiej sprawy narodowej. W książce, poza analizą tego typu wypowiedzi Norwida, nie zabrakło też wyników badań nad wpływem, jaki na poetycką twórczość Norwida wywarła jego ,,rzymska wyobraźnia” oraz analiz przekładów z łacińskich poetów, tj. Horacego i Owidiusza. Ukazane zostały ponadto mechanizmy kształtowania się swoistej „rzymskiej tożsamości” Norwida, ujawniającej się m.in. w jego listach. The aim of this work is to interpret Cyprian Norwid’s complex and ambivalent relationship to ancient Romanitas and to reveal the wide range of references he makes to Ancient Roman realities. This is the first monograph to deal with such Roman references in Norwid’s work. Part One investigates the different meanings that Rome had to Norwid and looks at the poet’s visits to the Eternal City. There is also an analysis of the significance of Italy and also Greek and Roman antiquity in the 19th century. The next part is focused on the Norwid’s opinions about the history of Ancient Rome and the historical figures that shaped it, including such issues as the problem of state and nation in ancient Rome, the turn of the eras and the relationship between Roma pagana and Roma Christiana, inter alia in the poem Quidam. The third chapter investigates Norwid’s view of the literature and art of ancient Rome (also its ruins). Among the literary questions, aside from the origins and character of Roman literature, there is a discussion of the references to the Roman “literary world” repeatedly used by Norwid to write about his own struggles with publishers, critics and readers. The last and the most philological part examines how Norwid’s “Roman imagination” influenced his poetry, along with an analysis of Norwid’s translations of poems by Horace and Ovid. Furthermore, there is also a presentation of the mechanism of the specific “Roman identity” appearing in Norwid’s correspondence.
