W oparciu o materiały historyczne oraz źródła archeologiczno-architektoniczne dokonano przeglądu dotychczasowej historiografii na temat roli fundatorów i ich fundacji klasztornych w Polsce i Europie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem działalności budowlanej Cystersów.
