Abstract

This communication aims to address the factors that influence residential segregation and social inequality in medium-sized cities through the case of Ciudad Real. This municipality has undergone a significant transformation in recent decades, with strong growth accompanied by growing phenomena of urban segregation and social inequality, which need to be analyzed and interpreted. For this purpose, secondary statistical information is used mainly, coming from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Through the integration of socioeconomic data in a Geographic Information System (GIS), an analysis of the distribution and relationship between the variables is carried out, which allows the information to be visualized and analyzed. In this way, using the Pearson correlation coefficient, the degree of association between pairs of variables has been evaluated, which allows identifying patterns of association between factors in the different neighborhoods of the capital of Ciudad Real. The results confirm the existence of socio-spatial differences, with certain groups concentrated in specific areas of the city, both those with low income and those with higher income and education. This allows us to establish the importance of developing a comprehensive approach when addressing socio-spatial inequality.
